Student "X" Work Sample #4

When Student "X" was tested on word reading skills he read 16 out of 20 words correct. This put "X" at 80% and in the instruectional Level. When tested on the Primer level "X" read 14 out of 20 correct. This put "X" at a 75%, however, still in the instructional level range. I then tested "X" on the 1st and 2nd grade word lists. "X" scored 13 out of 20 on the first grade list at  65% and 8 out of 20 on the 2nd grade list at 40%. "X" is at a frustrational level on the 1st and 2nd grade levels.

This information shows that Student "X" has a word recognition level 3 years below that of his current grade level. My observation is that he can read words that can be sound out with simple 2-3 letter phonemes. When there are blends or dipthongs he gets frustrated and unsure of what the sounds are. He is also unable to see root words unless the prefix or suffix is covered up. For example he could not read the word picked. However, when I covered up the ed he could sound out the word pick.

From this information I begin a new phonics program with "X" to help recognize root words and learn to recognize and decode dipthongs.
